Constructed Wetlands

Curt Kerns, president, worked on the predecessor of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, the region’s premiere constructed wetland, and studied under its designer, Professor Robert A. Gearheart. In 1998 we began offering constructed wetland design and build services. Constructed wetlands are a series of shallow ponds that remove contaminants from water using the same mechanisms and principals as natural wetlands. We offer two basic types, the Vegetative Tertiary Filter (VTF), typically used with single-family dwellings, and for larger flows, free water surface constructed wetlands.

The Vegetative Tertiary Filter is the most suitable application for single family residences and small multi-family units.

Free Water Surface Constructed Wetlands which is designed for larger multi-family units, commercial and industrial application with larger flows (3000 g-p/d).

Wetlands come in various shapes and sizes. In McBride, BC they developed a green solution to their sewage treatment problems; an upgraded treatment plant provides a higher quality discharge and is now being used to sustain a rich wetland.
